I had the chance of attending an orientation program conducted by Oracle a few days ago. Will write a separate post on that when time permits , but will surely write , since I definitely want the experience to be recorded. For now I plan to write about something that happened in course of this orientation that set me thinking. Basically we were given a sheet that listed some characters….about twelve if I remember well…We were asked to assume that these twelve people were trapped somewhere , and our job was to come up with discussions on which four among the twelve should be rescued.
Here is the list , for your benefit :
a)An arrogant carpenter.
b)An aging doctor who was suffering from arthritis.
c)A young nurse who had a racy lifestyle.
d)A priest who was biased and fatalistic.
e)A pregnant lady .
f)A medical student who was physically ill.
g)A sportsman /an Olympics champion.
h)A teenager without a high IQ.
i)A cook who keep crying always.
j)A 64 year old scientist who was a Nobel prize winner.
k)An egoistic actor.
There was one more in the list , which I am just not able to recollect.
Here are my thoughts/justifications on which four amongst the twelve should be saved and why.
I for sure would not consider saving the carpenter , because he is said to be arrogant . I have like anyone else always had this aversion towards people who are arrogant and who think they are the best things to happen to others on this earth. Trust me , I have actually met some of these kinds. Anyway will not deviate from the topic. The point is (a) is ruled out. Therefore the carpenter stays in the ship with his arrogance.
Next is the aging doctor who was suffering from arthritis. I guess the doctor is aging , but is less than 60 years of age. This I say because had he been anything close it would have been mentioned like it is in point (j) . This proves that the doctor could be in his late 40s or late 50s. The chances of his living are not very bleak. Also, it is said that he was suffering from Arthritis and Arthritis by no means is a life taking disease. Now coming to whether I would rescue the doc or not , I might consider saving him , thinking of the long term benefits he would bring to the society if he is in the society. I guess I am a little different here. Different I say because most of the people who I discussed this stuff with , said they would make their decisions of saving a person or not based on the capacity of the individual to escape out of the boat , and not based on what benefits they would bring if they were saved. I am not sure if that is the way to approach this problem , because this is one of those things which I for sure know I wouldn’t approach emotionally. It does matter to me how beneficial you would be to the society if I am to choose your whether you live or die , since I believe in purpose of existence ..meaning if your living is the society is not purposeful I do not see a point why you need to live. Sorry if that sounded rude, but it was not intended to . All that I am saying here is very relevant to this particular situation where I need to choose you over others. Therefore my point here is , that aging doctor is to be rescued. (Mental note to myself : I better give shorter explanations , since there are so many more left in the list J.)
Next is “A young nurse who had a racy lifestyle”. Hmmm….Dunno…what I would do here…Her lifestyle info is immaterial to me. Therefore the relevant piece of info is that it is a nurse who is young. Not able to make a decision immediately. Will keep on hold.
The next one is a priest who is biased and fatalistic. Biased and fatalistic is one of the worst combination traits that a person can have , particularly when he is a priest and is expected to have the highest standards of morality . Therefore the priest stays back in the ship ( praying for someone to rescue him , and may be promising that in the event he reaches the world safe , he would think of mending his ways).
Fifth is a pregnant lady. First in the list to be saved. Without any length explanations , I would like to come straight to the point here , that I would have made this decision of saving her considering that she is carrying a life with her.
Sixth in line is a medical student who is physically ill…Uhh…hmmm…Dunno why but I felt there is no point in saving him , one reason being he is physically ill..This means despite being a medico he is not able to take care of himself. Therefore his chances of taking care of others automatically comes down. All arguments made against my point here , considering his knowledge of medical science , automatically die , because of two reasons. Number one , he is only a student and is not a doc yet. Number two , even if you give him a benefit of doubt and argue that he is an exceptionally bright student , you would still be not very correct since he hasn’t been able to use his medical knowledge to keep himself fit. Therefore sadly enough but definitely he stays back in the ship. L
Now comes the Sportsman /Olympics champion. Nah..Would’nt consider saving him…I do not see a point why I need to. Period.
Then comes the teenager without a high IQ. Without a High IQ is an irrelevant piece of info here. The only weighted piece of information in the sentence is that it is a teenager. Why I say this is because more than half the population in our world anyways does not have a great IQ. Now coming to whether the teenager should be saved or now, I think he should be. Don’t you also think so? Because see, he is just a teenager. Wouldn’t have seen much of the world .So I guess he should be given a chance to experience life. I don’t think I save much by not saving him ,. Therefore I would save him.
Next is a cook who keeps crying always. I would for sure not save her. Put it simply , it is because saving her is useless. Plus, even if I develop a soft corner for her and save her , she would be spreading negative energy amongst the survivors , by constantly crying. I would rather wisely use my power to save someone who could spread good will than saving someone who would keep crying/complaining/nagging since I believe by doing all this you are already dead. So the question of saving you does not arise at all. Therefore , sorry cook. You stay in the ship!
Last but one is a 64 year old scientist who was a Nobel prize winner. Both the parts of this sentence are extremely relevant for me. This is why I am a lil confused. Had the scientist just been either of the two , meaning either a Nobel prize winner or old , my decision of whether to save him or not would have been pretty quick. But now I am in a fix..Hmmm…Lemme think loud…He is a Nobel prize winner, I mean a NOBEL prize winner!! So would be a very knowledgeable person . Could have been considered …but only if he hadn't been this old. The average life span of a person has come down to as low as 50 now. Going by this fact , I am not sure of the longevity of this person. Wouldn’t want to save him by giving him a benefit of doubt , because I think it is not worth doing that at the cost of another life.
Lastly , we have the egoistic actor ..who anyways we wudnt consider saving because of obvious reasons.
Coming to the nurse about who we weren't sure I can comfortably say at this point of time that she should be saved, because without her out list of four seems to be incomplete! J
Therefore the final list of four who I would think of saving is , the aging doctor who is suffering from arthritis , the pregnant lady , the nurse , and of course the teenager.
