Vocabulary of the IT
First of all , wish you all a very happy new year! May GOD bless you with all the strength and support!
In my last post ,I did say that I would blog before the new year starts only if anything interesting happened. Interesting things did happen , but I was so busy doing the interesting stuff that I had no time whatsoever to blog. My Coorg trip was one such thing. Will write a seperate post on it soon.Only a full post dedicated to COORG will do justice to the place. For now I just thought of writing a post describing the software jargon that I have been listening to and learning from
since the last three years I spent in this industry. Gawd knows how I am going to survive here for the rest of my life. I cannot be spending the whole of my life blogging alone.;) I need to be convinced that this industry has better things for me to stay here for long
. Btw , did I tell you that not everything I write here is devoid of exaggeration?
Anyway, will not deviate much from the topic. So quickly , here is the list : Newbies , you better learn these things before hand … Ok ok Not to worry, even if you dont , you’l willingly or unwillingly start using jargons yourself , after spending a few months here. I last heard from someone/somewhere that CISCO is planning to get away with the jargon trend , because they feel it is something that people normally do not follow.
“Hi , how are you?” is a thing of the past. “Hey , what’s up!?” is the trend now. Also , people no longer find things good , instead they find them ‘cool‘. You dont have bugs assigned to your name, you have bugs in your plate. You are expected to know what acronyms like brb and lol stand for. Typing ‘going to go’ is considered out of fashion. “Gotta Go” is the word. “No problems” is a thing of the past. “No issues” is the present trend.
. You are not treated as a person. You are treated as a ‘resource’. “Are we on the same page” is what you ask to know if the person agrees with what you said. “Keep me in sync /loop” …another one that I can think of… I use this heavily myself… It used to drive me crazy in the past when someone said ‘We are good to go” …I used to wonder people are trying to show off so much! Now I know they are not to be blamed. With or without your knowledge you fall in the trap!
.When you have some extraordinary ideas you are considered a person who “thinks out of the box“. I still look surprised when someone asks me if I have the necessary bandwidth to fix an issue. I feel cant I be asked the same in plain english? Ask me straight whether I have the skills and the time and the interest..;) But yeah , I do reply in their own style that ‘Hey dude I guess not , my plates are full at the moment‘ , when I myself could have replied in a plain language “I cannot take up this now , because I am working on somethting else”. It gets so difficult to talk straight these days ! I am sure most of you would have heard “Let’s take it offline‘ during meetings/discussions. It is considered a sin to say you wanna (notice “wanna” , not “want to”) talk about it after the meeting gets over..:) . I still do not know why I cannot say that I wanna do xyz things in future? Why on earth should I be saying “Going forward I intend to do xyz things in future?” Please note that I am not trying to blame anyone here , because I am no saint myself. There are more such related examples. One that I can quickly think of is people saying that they are going to go ahead ,do a knowledge transfer and sync up with a customer on the latest happenings …when they could just have said that they plan to share what they know with the customer and trying to get to the same level (I know ‘get to the same level’ itself sounds like a jargon , but I couldnt think of a plainer way of conveying this.:)) ..And yes…I forgot…YES is no longer YES and NO is no longer ‘NO’ . Yep and Nope are the right words to use…:)
Sope..
thatz the analysis thus far…Will update this again the next time I hear a new jargon..I am sure that will be sometime soon..
Until then , c ya, enjoi the new year , and have a blast! BTW I am aware that the way I presented this post sucks big time, but when did I ever claim that I am good at presentations?
